I am a hispanic girl planning on applying early to columbia. I am 6th in my class out of about 1000 students. I am planning on submitting my ACT score instead of my SAT + subject tests. I got a 32 composite score (34 English, 34 Math, 28 Science, and 33 English) and 8 on the writing section. I am taking the ACT again on September 21st.
As my extracurriculars go, I am on the debate team and have accomplishments from debate tournaments; in addition, I started a charity for stomach cancer and have a club at my high school devoted to the foundation as well as at a couple other schools. I am also a part of NHS and EHS.
I think my essay and letters of recommendation are pretty good, and I am visiting the school in October (I have heard mixed opinions of this helping one's chances of getting in, so I figured I would give it a shot).

What do you think my chances are applying Early decision?
Should I apply to a different school? Upenn?

You must have chosen Columbia ED for a reason, so don’t switch to Penn or another school just because of acceptance rates. That being said, Hispanic is a hook, 32 is on the low end for Ivy League, and you’re ECs seem to be lacking. I’m sure you have some debate awards, but hopefully what you do is enough! Class rank is great, what’s your unweighted GPA?

Not sure if visiting actually helps your shots, but it does show how serious you are and its something to definitely mention in an interview.

Thanks so much for replying!
My unweighted is a 3.9, my weighted is a 5.5, and I do have quite a lot of debate accomplishments/I am an officer.
Another extracurricular I have is that I intern for a congresswoman. Do you think I am still lacking a lot in this regards?
Also, about how much do you think I need to raise my ACT by to really beter my chances?

I think your chances are pretty good. Especially, Early Decision. If you can raise your ACT score just a little bit, that would be an even bigger advantage. As of right now though, I would say you have a pretty decent chance of getting in. Best of luck!
