Hi! I am going to college next year but I do not know if I am good enough. I want to do economics/ finance. My sat result is 1850 ( this is my first time and i am gonna take it again in oct). I am gonna take Math2 and World Hist this june. I am an international student from Hong Kong but now I am studying in the UK for GCE. I am doing History, Further Math and Economics ( predicted grades: AAB). Does my GCE result matter for us colleges? actually I am thinking about UVA, Umichigan, Duke, Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern, UCBerkeley.. What is my chance and what schools would you recommend? Thanks a lot!!!!

A-levels are only part of what constitutes a GPA for American colleges. GCSEs (or whatever are their equivalents in HK) also are part of it.

If you can stomach cold campuses and harsh grading, U Toronto Rotman is feasible. Concordia Molson (if you want finance) or McGill (for economics; finance at McGill Desautels sucks) as well. That said, you also need to list your extracurriculars.

UVA: Aim for 2100+/31+
UMI Ross: Aim for 2100+/31+
CMU Tepper: Reach
NWU Kellogg: Reach
Berkeley Haas: Aim for 2100+/31+ (can you pay full freight?)
Duke Trinity: Reach

^ I generally agree with Catria’s assessment. But for Ross at UMich, I would say you need 2160+/32+. I will also add the comment: “can you pay full freight?” to it.

Thanks a lot. I think i can pay full freight… And for my ‘gpa’ i just have GCE result but no GCSEs because i skipped year 11 and went straight to year 12 last year. Does it hurt my chance if i can get 2100+ in my sat? And I heard that higher SAT sub test will offset low sat scores is that true?
My list of extracurricular activities:
volunteer work: in British Foundation Book Shop every Saturday,
work experience: probably going to work in manulife in this summer
School: debate team in hk; enterprise competition in the uk - several prizes; speech and drama exams - grade 5 and 6 merit/distinction
I play tennis and have learnt Russian for 1.5 years.
Are they okay or I should have some more?

I am not sure if i should stick with my choices… anyway, i will try my best!

It depends on the school. If you your SAT1 Math section score is a little bit lower due to careless mistakes, then a good Math2 score may help a little bit. However, this adjustment probably would not happen until your SAT1 score passed the cutoff first. Anyway, if you are from HK, your Math should be good. ;-)
