Cumulative GPA at end of first quarter senior year: 3.97
Top 15% end of junior year. Probably moved up now since my gpa is higher.

National Honor Society 11th and 12th grade (Tutoring and volunteering)
Over 140 hours of independent volunteering (including overseas, libraries, marathons, homeless shelters, etc.)

Student of the Month 7th, 8th, 9th, and 12th grades.
95th percentile PSAT junior year by which I mean I didn't get the asterisk next to my selection index. Does that achievement count for anything?
AP Scholar

One of my recommendations is coming from the 12th grade teacher who picked me for student of the month.

I know my stats aren't that great for UVA, and Virginia Tech is my first choice for engineering. But chance me anyway, because I still have some interest in UVA. Thanks for reading and any input is greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure you can get in both universities. I am also applying to UVA.

Thanks for replying. What major are you interested in?

My stats are really similar...and im asian too...ur GPA(if unweighted)...is quite a bit higher...but our test scores are almost identical...how does having a 3.97 make you only top 15%???....does ur school must have a lot of straight A kids...actually...like around 10% of ur class...dang...so competitive...anyways...I think you'll get into tech...and I REALLY hope you get into UVA..cause that means i'll likely get in...

I was in the top 15% when my GPA was 3.8. That GPA was at the end of the junior year/beginning of senior year. Now it is 3.9 after the first quarter of the senior year, so my rank is probably higher up. But then again, that 3.9 might go down again after second quarter and midterms are over. That would be my final semester GPA then, the GPA colleges under regular decision will look at.

you're definitely in, especially since you're in-state.

In general, are essays a big part of UVA offering admissions? I'm having a hard time coming up with a good topic for the last essay, so any tips on that?

BUMP for an urgent question. In the application for in-state domicile, it says if I and my parents are not citizens of the US, the following:

"IF NON-U.S., PROVIDE A COPY OF GREEN CARD OR VISA. DATE SENT: "

After Date Sent is a text field to type in the date I sent the copy I guess. My question is, first of all, how do I send a copy of our green cards? Through mail, fax, or email? And what I should I put on the copy? I know George Mason University had an ID for each applicant that we were supposed to put on out immigration forms and other documents I wished to send to GMU. I can't figure out if UVA has something like that to accurately correspond my green card to my application. Second, what is the due date for sending the copy of the green card? If it is Jan 2, 2008, can I mail it out on Jan 1 (tomorrow) and still have my application be considered on time? Third, the application already asked for our green card numbers in the "BACKGROUND" part of the application, so is that not enough?

Well those are my questions, and I would greatly appreciate a quick reply.

I would send an email to Admin. They are quick to respond and they will know best.

thanks for replying guillaume. I emailed the admissions office and got an auto response telling they're on break.

Bump. Can anyone please answer my green card question?

Last year I had a screw up with my social security # on my application. I know, I know, really dumb. UVA wanted a copy of my SS card. In your case you have two options. You could take a digital photo of your family's green cards and send it as an attachment in e-mail. I mean, you could do that right now if you wanted to. Or, xerox the green cards and FAX the copy of the cards to UVA. I know they check their emails and FAX's often.
I chose to do the FAX for UVA, but did the photo option for another University. I know, I know. Doh.
If they are asking for copies, then you must send, even though the #'s have been recorded by you on the application.
DO NOT trust the C'Ville snail mail system. It's soooo slow, it's ridiculous and will cause you much angst if you do. FAX or do the photo e-mail/attachment. Include a cover letter or e-mail, respectively, explaining what you are sending. Hope this helps.

Oh, my digital camera has this little flower button that one can select if you are trying to take accurate pictures of very small items. That worked great for me. Good luck.

Thanks for replying. I don't know if my new camera has that feature. I just got it and haven't explored it yet. Can I just scan my green card using a scanner and then email the scanned image as an attachment?

Sure! Sometimes when you scan, and then try to shrink to send as an attachment, it can get a little tricky. But, I've got a MAC and it makes it child's play!! If you have a MAC, I can walk you through it if you need me to.
Or just get your camera out, point and shoot, if the photo is good, you'll know right away--download to your computer and send away!
You've got options!

Thanks for replying again. I'm surprised UVA doesn't give each applicant and ID or unique number so that admissions can match my documents to my application like George Mason does.

Well, I guess they go by their SS#--that's what they did last year, but I know they are trying to phase out of that. And, I don't know enough about green cards>>I think you have the option of getting a SS #, but may not necessarily have one????
Post your Date of birth (DOB), address, and any specific info about yourself that you can.

Yes, I do have a ssn, so I put it in my app.

So, Ok, you've got a SS#, that's the best way to ID yourself with UVA. They will change this in the future, but they haven't yet. Somewhere, put your name, SS#, DOB, address on your selected mode of communication, so that there is no misunderstanding. You should ask for a reply e-mail, or something, that ackowledges that they did receive your communication.

Ok cool. One more thing. For one of the 250 word essays, I have 350 words. Is that too much over?
