My Daughter just finished her junior year of high school and she has a 3.71 unweighted GPA with honors ranking, and she got a 28 on her ACT. Shes taking 4 or 5 AP classes next year, and shes taken 5 AP classes so far. And shes also involved a lot with volunteering at a hospital, and activities at her school like speech, debate, newspaper, world language honors society, national honors society, french club and some other stuff too. She is highly successful at Speech and Debate. Shes also interning at the U this summer with a professor. What would you say her chances are at the University of Minnesota- Twin cities, College of Science and Engineering

docmommy - your D sounds like a wonderful kid! Here are the stats for this year’s freshman class:

I had a 3.4 gpa, 28 act, took 7 ap classes in high school (4 in senior year) and the only volunteering I had was with the Key club, which was also my only extracurricular, so I think your daughter has a wonderful chance.

Is she planning to retake the ACT? She already sounds like a fantastic applicant, but improving her score by a point or two would make her chances even better.

Kajon,GMan24,Papertown thank you for replying to my post. Papertown we really haven’t talked about retaking the ACT in September yet, but I think that she would be fine retaking it. So you don’t think that the College of Science and Engineering would be hard to get into for my daughter?

CSE continues to raise their standards for admitted students. This year, I believe the average ACT score for a CSE student was 30 point something. That’s two points above your daughter’s score. She should retake it in September, for sure.

Thanks for the replies guys my daughter decided to take the ACT in september and she’s preparing for it. But it would be great if I could get more feedback on her chances at the college of science and engineering at the U of M with the current statistics.

Your daughter’s GPA is average for CSE. As for the ACT score, 88% of admitted CSE students score 28 or higher and the average is 30.6. The UofM is a great possibility but make sure she has some safeties she likes as well in case things don’t work out.
