What is my first language????

So I was having this argument with my parents over the weekend about my first language about how since I go to school in the US, my first language is English. I was born in China and have lived there until fifth grade. Chinese is the first language I learned when I was born and I can speak and read most of the words. (but forgot how to write most words already :( ) I always speak Chinese to my parents but speak English when I am communicating with others. I am not very good at speaking English as people have made fun of my heavy accent. So what should I put as my first language on Common App. Will putting Chinese put me at an disadvantage?

Whichever language you learned first is your first language, so Chinese definitely counts. If you began learning both at the same time, they are both your first languages. But if you started learning English when you moved to the U.S. or when you started school in China, then it’s not your first language.

When you came to the US after fifth grade, I bet you may have attended an ESL class at least briefly. Even if you have no problem in communicating in English, it is still your second language.

@billcsho are you saying that english is my 2nd language?

For some colleges, it claims that if English is not your first language, you have to take the TOEFL. I have taken AP Lang and Honors courses in English and have done well in those classes. Does anyone think I am exempt in this case?

Check the college websites. Every college is different. Most colleges will not require TOEFL if you went to HS in the US, or if the language of instruction is English.

To your earlier question, English is your second language.

Yes, English is your second language. ESL class means English as Second Language. Some school waive the TOEFL requirement if you went to high school in US. Some even waive TOEFL for just 1 or 2 years instead of all 4 years high schools in the US. Some school would waive TOEFL if you reach certain score in SAT CR/W.

English is ur 2nd language.
I have similar background as u , I came to usa when I was in 5th grade, lol. Does ur name sound really Chinese? If yes, like me, u r already in a disadvantage. If ur a girl, then aa should hurt you less . Well, being a chinese girl is better than being a chinese dude:) put eng as 1st lang is almost… lying to the admission officers.
