Hello all :-) This is my first post here and I hope that some kind folks out here can help answer a few questions I have.

Well to sum things up I am an accounting undergraduate student and Im in my junior year. I attend CUNY Baruch college where I am completing my BBA in accounting and MS in taxation or accountancy(Not decided yet). The recruiting season is coming up and I really want to land an internship over the Summer of 2015, or maybe even during the tax season if allowed and I want to know what my chances of landing an internship are.

My GPA currently is 3.8 overall and 4.0 in my major. I am also minoring in Communications.
As far as on campus related activities go(i.e. clubs organizations) Im affiliated with none.
I work part time during the semester, usually 18-22 hours weekly.
I plan on doing some community service to make up for the lack of clubs because the club hours interfere with my work schedule.
I do have 20 hours of community service from my senior year of high school but do you think that is worth putting on my resume?
Also there are some gaps in my work experience, how should I go about handling this?

Based on all of the above can anyone tell me what my chances of landing an internship are?

If you have any additional questions for me please ask I will answer ASAP

I agree, talk to career services. I don’t know the extent to which the Big 4 hire at Baruch. But I would definitely not put HS stuff on your resume. I think firms will respect the fact that you work instead of dong activities on campus.

Hi and thank you both for responding. I am in contact with the career department at my school and a lot of heir advice is helpful. However they advise everyone, regardless of major, to move up in the ranks in a club because it almost garuntees you a job. I just simply don’t have the time to do that. I have to work to pay for books, travel and loans. I just wanted to get a more diversified response to really put things in to perspective.

Maybe there are some recent hires out there that could let me know what they look for?

Being the president of a club doesn’t guarantee hire if your grades are not on par. Grades come first but if you have 2 candidates with similar credentials, they will look at activities. Your grades are solid so I would be very surprised if you did not get an interview.

Tell them your story and how you need to work to support yourself. You should be fine.

I’d imagine that firms will count a job as similar to an EC. I’d imagine that people would respect students who work to help pay their way through college.

Don’t downplay the part-time job! You’ve got great grades (especially in your major) while juggling work and other demands. I think that says a lot more for your work ethic and smarts than many other ECs. My D graduated from college in 2012 and interned for a big 4 in the previous summer. At the time she interviewed for her internship, she had great grades but no work experience and few ECs. She still had multiple internship offers.

Wow thanks for all the helpful replies! I will make sure to explain my working situation to them. And of course I will be practicing my interviewing skills by answering mock interview questions :)
