I recently received a copy of my transcript and noticed a 9-digit student number. I was wondering what this is for; I’m guessing it’s some sort of nation-wide identifier. Do colleges use this number during the admission process, and what does it say about me? (For example, does it show my transcripts/academic records/schools I’ve been enrolled in?)
The number on my high school transcript is a state-issued student ID. To the best of my knowledge, this number is simply an identifier used mostly to differentiate between students in the school’s, district’s, and state’s computer systems.
@happymomof1 No, it’s not my social security number; however I was wondering a similar thing: do colleges want to see your social security number? Or are social security numbers and student ID numbers for the most part irrelevant?
Social Security numbers might be needed to verify financial aid paperwork, and it is possible that some colleges still use them as unique identifiers to help keep all of the bits of your application together. However, until someone asls for your SSN, don’t give it to them. If they do want it, find out why. Sometimes there are specific legal requirements to collect them.
Your school ID is only important for your school. I can’t imagine any reason why a college woukd need or want that. It is irrelevant for their purposes. If you are admitted they will give you a student ID number themselves.
