My small cousin wishes to study games development. He needs to know what is required, academically, for acceptance into a recognized games development institution such as the Aukland, NZ based Leading Design Courses | Media Design School New Zealand
If you need more information to answer this just ask. Thanks in advance.

What specifically does he want to do with games?

Code games?
Do the art for games?
Do the story-writing for games?
Just sit in a chair and think up of ideas for games?

Hint: there are no jobs for someone whose only skill is to “design games”, unless you have multiple years of game industry experience. Someone who wants to do games needs experience in one of the specific sub-fields.

I would say all you need to do is just pursue a standard CS degree. Once you hit the upper level classes, take a few video game coding/design courses.

Agree with Atemporal. Standard CS track. Go light on the theory, take at least one CS graphics class. Many top tier schools do not offer a “game coding” or “design” course, because, quite frankly, those are not necessary - coding is coding is coding. I spoke to someone at EA Games once, and he said that having completed actual video games on your own initiative (outside of class), either individually or with a group, is more important than GPA/what school you go to, etc.
