Hello! I am currently in my junior year of high school and am just beginning to physically visit colleges. So far, I've visited one university and didn't really feel a connection. Right now, I have my heart set out on attending NYU. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me about what it's like to be a student at NYU. It'd also be nice to hear some things about the social and night life (I'm not a partier, though), as well. Also, what is it like to be in New York? Please feel free to share anything else you would like to, as well!

This is just a picky/specific question, but could someone get into NYU (Steinhardt) with at least 1900 SAT and a 3.95 (unweighted) GPA? Also, this is somewhat random for this particular forum, but what are some other colleges that admit students with that SAT score and that GPA?

Thank you so much! Really, you don't know how much this means to me. I'm very much of a small-town girl (although I technically live in a city) and well, I am sort of confused about this entire college process. I've attended the same school since elementary school and have lived in the same city since then, too. My heart (and mind, frankly) tells me that I should go to a city, but, I don't know...I've never been anywhere without my family, which is why it's so confusing.

I wouldn’t be afraid of going out of area for college if you’re willing to take a job away from home. The big question is, can you afford NYU? NYU’s financial aid is generally loan heavy owing to their small per person endowment.

The fact of the matter is, all but the most selective schools will admit someone with your stats. Many will also give merit aid. I’d recommend taking the SAT one or two more times (go on the test prep subforum for some good study advice) since scores can dramatically increase from the beginning of junior year to the start of senior year.

You need to ask your parents how much they can pay for college. Don’t have them mumble out an answer. Have them give you a specific number. That will determine where you can go. Then go to the EFC calculator on college websites, plug in the information and see how much various schools will expect you to pay.

First of all, thank you so much! Your advice was truly helpful, while also reassuring…I’d like to go to a good college, but that doesn’t have to mean an Ivy. I live in Rhode Island, by the way.

Also, when you say the “most selective”, does that include NYU? I mean, on the US News Rankings, it says that NYU is the most selective. I’m sorry to be so annoying…I’m sort of obsessed with NYU right now (but it might just be a phase, though).
