What Is Penn Financial Aid Like?

I ask this as a current HS senior (Wharton applicant) whose older sister is a Penn senior.

I know that, supposedly, Penn will meet all "demonstrated" financial need, but in my family's experience, "demonstrated" has been a rather interesting word.

My sister's financial aid, for the record, was terrible. With absolutely no exaggeration, her education has cost the equivalent of 7 years' worth of my mother's salary. My father used to make substantially more (perhaps why Penn granted us so little aid), but he now no longer financially supports the family.

Needless to say, my family can't afford for me to attend Penn if it costs as much as it cost for my sister. I'm wondering about others' experiences, because I'm beginning to think I ought to just cross Penn off my list right now.

My family makes slightly more than 60K and is significantly (100K +) in debt. That being said, I am getting 50K a year and was admitted ED this year. I obviously am biased, but I would say they are fairly generous. It sounds like your father’s history, unfortunately, did not help. However, if your income taxes can support the fact that he no longer supports your family (and regardless of whether it can or not, MAKE MENTION OF THIS in some detail on the Penn supplement and CSS profile in additional information), added to the fact that your sister is attending college and you would be the second in college, you should get a decent package. Good luck! I hope things work out for you!

Decent but not fantastic.

Mine was pretty generous considering my parents’ combined income is around 120,000. They gave me 31,000 a year partially due to the fact that they took into consideration that my parents are paying for my sisters Penn State education simultaneously. It definitely seems like a reasonable/generous grant

I think it’s supposed to be good compared to most schools, but somewhat stingier compared to the other Ivies, but that’s just what I’ve heard

My daughter was accepted ED and we got our fin. aid package offer shortly after, so we could make a decision. Our family income is about 70k and I have one other student in college. There offer was almost grant aid was 42,000, 3,100 work study and EFC of 9,000. I did realize later that I forgot to enter our EFC for my son that is already in college, however, I can correct this later I was told and her package should be slightly better. I thought this was quite generous!
