What is Polylearn?

So I have been hearing about this “Polylearn” course that incoming freshmen have to take before getting their fall schedules. I’d just like to know if anyone has more details about this required program.

Also I was wondering if any current/former students and parents of Cal Poly know when my application status will change from conditionally admitted to officially admitted. The school has already received my final transcript so i’m just waiting on my status to change.

Poly learn is where teachers post information for students to find. Your teachers will post grades, lectures, powerpoints, and general class information in Polylearn. It’s the resouce that connects the teacher to the student.

In this case, cal poly wants you do the Polylearn course to get accustomed to using it. You don’t really need to do it, and I never did. Polylearn is pretty easy and straight forward to use. If you feel it would be beneficial, go ahead and complete the course. It shouldn’t take more than a few hours to complete.

As for your second post, call Cal Poly and explain the situation, they should be able to change the status. In addition, I would log onto your Cal Poly student center (within the cal poly portal) and ensure that their are no items on your “to-do” list.

Thanks for that info @r77r77! About two weeks ago the final transcript request fell off of my to-do list so i’m just waiting for my app status to change. I know that they’re probably receiving 100’s of transcripts a day so I understand how it could take a little bit longer to have the status change. Thanks again!

@r77r77 I just checked my app status and it finally changed to officially admitted. However I have heard in years past that once we get officially admitted we have more information posted onto our portals. Yet my portal is almost exactly the same except for that app status change.

@bkallday1‌ You will get access to a few more items later on, such as Mustang Jobs and some other financial links. I think it takes them a little bit to update the portal for incoming freshmen. I’m not sure if you have access to Polyplanner and PASS (plan a student schedule), but those are the two links you will be using most for planning out classes.

Congrats on your admission
Feel free to post or message me if you have any questions.

@r77r77 During the middle of the week I received full portal access so i’m good to go
So after looking over my degree flowchart for History majors I noticed that because I took and passed some AP tests I now have 12 degree applicable units. It’s great and all and so that means according to the flowchart i’m taking 14 units fall quarter, and 12 units each in winter and spring quarter(s). My main question is about registration rotation. I looked on the university registrar’s website and found out that I have 10th rotation winter quarter and 6th rotation spring quarter (As you know fall quarter doesn’t count since freshmen get block scheduled). Thus I’m wondering for the winter quarter if it will be impossible to get classes because of my lame rotation number?

It won’t be impossible to get classes, you may or may not be able to get into all the classes you would like, but it will work out and you will be a full time student carrying a full academic load. My son had 12th rotation for fall and was able to get into 3 classes that he wanted (13 units). Actually he’s wait list for one of the classes but he was told he would get in. He also plans to take one general ed. online class from Foothill to get it out of the way.

@bkallday1‌ You should be fine! I had 11th rotation my freshman year and was able to get all the classes I needed. You might have to put in a bit of time searching for classes or crashing, but it’s definitly something that will be a good skill in the long run, better freshman year than senior year.

One thing that many people probably won’t tell you is that it’s best to have your worst rotations freshman year! Most of your classes won’t be hard to get anyways so 10th rotation won’t matter. And fortunately that means you save your better rotations for your upperclassmen years. 10th rotation as a senior would be very very bad because it would be hard to get those critical classes. Getting those high rotations done early ensures you have better rotations in the future!

If anything start planning out your classes and which terms to take them. Try not to take classes when they are listed on the flowchart to increase your odds of getting them. A little planning ahead of time goes a LONG way!

@r77r77 My fall block schedule isn’t going to be released onto my student center until 8/6 yet when I went to my student center yesterday clicked on “My Academics” then “My Course History” I saw my ap credits that are classified as “transferred” and four classes: ANT 250, HIST 110, MATH 118, and SPAN 101 that were classified as “In Progress.” Is this going to be my fall schedule or is the university going to modify/finalize it on 8/6? The reason why i’m concerned is because I took four years of spanish in high school and even though I won’t be able to take the spanish language placement test until WOW the survey cal poly sent me in may allowed me to select Span 201. Also I was wondering if I would be able to swap Math 118 for Coms 102?

@bkallday1‌
That is correct, the in progress courses are what you they have currently placed you in.

I can’t say definitively that they won’t change it, but chances are it won’t. The survey that you took has no impact on the classes they have put you in, it’s merely for determining interest so they can judge how many sections of various classes they need.

You should be able to swap MATH for COMS if you would like. Either, talk to an advisor over the phone or crash the class at the beginning of the term. I’d be happy to explain how to crash classes if needed.

Don’t stress over it too much. You’ll have to take all of those classes eventually and the order shouldn’t matter. Just take your first term easy and enjoy it while you get settled in.

I would contact the advising center about the SPAN 101/201 issue if the placement test changes things.

@r77r77 Thanks for that info! What I think I’m gonna do is if I’m most likely to be in those 4 classes then I’ll keep each one except SPAN 101 and swap it for ENGL 145 during my enrollment time. Then when I get to WOW i’ll take the spanish placement test and go from there. Do you think it is smart to take 16 units my first quarter or just to stick with 12? My plan is: 16 units (fall qtr), 14 units (winter qtr), and 12 units (spring qtr).

I would advise taking increasing amount of units each term, not decreasing.

So 12-14 fall, 14-15 winter, and 15-16 spring. This will help you build up workload and be more prepared for sophomore year.

Good luck and have fun!
