what is pre med? And is it worth it if you want to get into medical school?

What pre-med is not: it is not a major. If chosen on your application for admission, it does not determine anything concerning your admission to a college; your chances of admission do not go up or down one iota.

What it is: a college advisory program which anyone attending the college can choose to be a part of. You get advisors you can go to who will tell you what you need to do to get into med school, recommend courses to take and schedules, and provide information about applying to med school. They will also tell you that after getting a D in Organic Chemistry you should probably think about pursuing a different career path.

So if you are considering med school, the pre-med program can be helpful as a service to you and as a guide. If you choose pre-med on a college application form, you will also have to choose some real major that leads to a bachelors degree, like biology, chemistry, or anything else because no particular major is required to get into med school. What is required is that you take certain courses in math, science and writing, get a high GPA in your actual major and overall, and eventually take the MCAT and score high.
