What is premed?

okay so i am a junior in highschool, in Wisconsin. i wanted to know what premed was? what is a premed school? just kinda curious about it and was also wondering what are premed schools in Wisconsin. I do no want to go to UW Madison mostly because that is where i live and i kind of want to get away.

can someone just explain pre med to me, what it is, why its important, how you get into it. thanks

EDIT: i was just reading around and stumbled across this word/s:

Combined BA/MD school

what is that? is that a College with a Medical school also?

Pre-Med is the undergraduate experience that fulfills the academic requirements to make a student able to take the MCATs, and go to med school. At most schools, pre-med is NOT a major. Pre-med merely is the required sciences and maths, etc. necessary to take the test. You can major in whatever, Chem., Bio., or even Psych., whatever.
The combined programs are extremely selective and you receive your BA (bachelor degree) and your doctorate (MD) at the same school. Some schools have advanced programs where you gain both in 7 years, but most are 8. Most schools, however, do NOT offer combined degrees. Examples are Northwestern, Kent State, Brown (I think), Dayton, you really have to search for them.

okay so, my dad said you need to like apply to a pre med course or w/e? so is premed like a program you take that get you into the right class's at at a college to goto medical school? or do you just pick a regular major and take the other classes needed? i wan to goto School for Biochemistry or something in the biology field because thats what i like to do and that is what i do good in. I have read other posts that say most medical schools dont want everybody comming with a biochem major, they want it to be diverse, but how does someone taking a non-science major even get the other Pre med class's required?

also, could someone tell me if Uw(University Wisconsin): Milwuakee is a pre med school? or does anybody know about that particular school?

Pre Med consists of about 6 courses (English, Physics, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Biology, Calculus, and occasionally a few others in the Behavioural Sciences, such as psychology), so it's usually fairly easy to complete them in addition to your degree requirements. Most people will spread it out over the first two or three years, and spend the last year or two (depending on how long it took them to finish the courses) to study for the MCAT.

You should major in whichever subject you like the most. Some people feel like they have to major in biology and/or chemistry in order to get into med school; that simply is not the case. If you happen to like those subjects, then major in it. The reason is that you will most likely work harder in courses that you enjoy, and therefore you'll be able to achieve a higher GPA.

okay, so does anybody know about UW Milwuakee? if it is a Pre Med school how do you go about getting into those class's? i dont need to apply to get into premed right? i just need to take the required classes? like sign up for them on my own.

i am only a junior so over my last 2 years of highschool i will probably find out alot more about college and more on what i would like to do after Highschool, but i know that i should probably get an early start if i want to pursue this.

I think you would just sign up for these classes just as you would any other class. Those classes are not exclusively pre-med classes; there will be people there that are fulfilling other degree requirements (ie. Chemistry major, Physics, Math, etc)

If you're looking into University of Wisconsin, you might be interested in this program: <a href="http://www.med.wisc.edu/education/med_scholars/index.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.med.wisc.edu/education/med_scholars/index.php</a></p>

well see i dont think i have the grades for UW madison. see i didnt to good freshman and sophmroe year of highschool. im going to try and get a 3.5 + GPA junior year and senior year. and do good on my ACT. (I am a good test taker, on the statewide tests schools always give you, ive always been advanced), but i dont think it would be enough to get into UW Madison.

I was kind of thinking about going to:

<a href="http://www.uwm.edu/%5B/url%5D">http://www.uwm.edu/</a> for a Major in Biochem

and then going to:

<a href="http://www.mcw.edu/display/router.asp?DocID=1%5B/url%5D">http://www.mcw.edu/display/router.asp?DocID=1</a> for medical school

unless it would be possible to get into the UW Madison. i meen i know colleges would see me going from bad grades to good grades, and see that i took school seriously now. but i still dont think UW Madison would accept me into that program.

never know i guess

"prem" and "ed"

meaning, premiere education...

that simple.

well i see other posts on this forum about the best premed school with the best program??

what do they meen by best program? or what their % is? what does the % represent?

Generally when people ask "what school has the best premed program," they're asking, which school prepares their students the best; which schools send the highest percent of pre-med students (students that basically have said "I want to go to med school") to med school. Be careful when reading the percentages though, because it can be misleading.

Many schools will have a "Pre-med Advising Centre." There, the advisers will help students with finding volunteer work, internships, etc. as well as with the application process. I believe you also need a letter of recommendation from the pre-med committee if one exists at the school (it won't be held against you if you don't have one), or at least the letter is highly recommended.
