What is Rhetoric R1A about? Good class????

I signed up for Rhetoric 1A.001: “Revealing is Healing:” Rhetoric, Narrative, Emancipation (Satisfies reading and composition requirement) with profs: Diana Anders & Amanda Armstrong.

Is it a fun/easy class? How are these teachers? Since I still have time to switch to a different R/C class I want to know how it is. I looked for the professors on ratemyprofessors.com but they werent there.

well english classes are gsi-taught. and i’ve heard rhetoric classes are pretty difficult unless you enjoy english. so…take that with a grain of salt. it might be easy it might not be. subject doesn’t seem interesting to me though. however, i doubt you have time to switch to a different class (that is of your interest of course). whatever

Rhetoric R1A classes are usually much, MUCH more intensive than R1A classes in other departments. They focus on a lot of intensive analytical reading skills - instead of just looking at the typical figurative devices and stuff that you do in your high school English classes, you might have to think about philosophy, psychology, history, etc when analyzing readings. The meta-rhetorical analysis can be a killer too; you’re interpreting someone else’s use of rhetorical devices in their own critique of another piece…

You will probably come out of the class a better writer and reader, but it will take some hard work. If you enjoy that kind of material and you’re willing to put the work into it, take the class. You probably won’t get into another R1A at this point, anyways.

The small (~20 students) r&c classes are taught by GSIs and most won’t be on ratemyprof. I think there are some larger non-GSI r&c classes that aren’t taught by GSIs, but they’re not in the rhetoric dept. Yeah, you probably won’t be able to get into another r1a this late, so maybe try it out and get a backup class if you drop? I’m taking a rhetoric class this semester, so no experience and can’t comment on the material. Just pick one that’s interesting to you, hopefully one with a booklist with stuff you’ve read before.
