What is Scholars exactly?

Can a current student explain the Scholars program to me...it looks like you must also do an internship, and that scholars is for fresh and soph yrs. Does everyone live in those dorms...I heard there is a shortage of dorm rooms

In addition, does anyone know if scholars is considered part of the honors program at UMD?

I’m not in the program but I can answer a couple questions.

Most people live in the Scholars residence halls if they are a part of the program. I’m not sure if/how the housing shortage has affected sophomores living in these halls.

NO, Scholars is not part of the honors program. It is a separate and different program.

My son was in Scholars.

It’s a special interest program, not an honors program.

Most freshmen in the program live in the Scholars residence halls. Many sophomores live elsewhere but are still part of the program.

Scholars students chose a scholars group that interests them (choose early, they fill up). They may perform a service project one day during Orientation and they have to attend a Scholars class (I think it is one credit). There are also other service projects and meetings throughout the year.
