What is Self Studying?

I know, I know, what kind of dumb ass question is this.
I guess its pretty self explanatory. Studying by yourself.
But i just don't get what people by " I self studied AP bio and got a 5 on the exam" etc.
Can someone clarify?

So they got a textbook or prep book (sometimes both) and studied. Then they take the AP test and get a 5.

They studied by themselves.

Essentially, self-studying is taking a class that you are not ‘officially’ taking at school: in other words, taking a class without a teacher.

It can be done in a lot of different ways. Some people might buy a textbook, and read out of it. Some might use some sort of online resource. Some might take a class online (although some people don’t consider that a self-studying).

It can be done at different times as well. It can be very organized: self-studying for 45 minutes every day after school, or study for 5 hours each weekend. Or, it can be unorganized - with the person pretty much studying whenever s/he feels like.

the most cruel and unusual form of self-torture and punishment

^haha and studying by yourself on your own time with either a textbook or prep book and then you register for the exam and take it.

okay, i get it now

Would self-studying using KhanAcademy work for stuff?

^ yes, Khan academy can also serve as a supplementary teacher for your self study. Self studying to be honest is not very hard. If you have a schedule and you make at least an hour for yourself everyday to study, you should be fine.
@silencefell: yeah I absolutely agree lol
