What is Self studying?

Okay so I want to apply for a boarding school (NCSSM) and I have to make my sohpomore schedule PERFECT. So I wanted to self study pre calculus an English 2 so I could go straight to AP Calc and AP englsh. However I don't know how to do this?
Is there a test I can take that will let me place out of those courses

you have to talk to someone at your school and ask if you’re allowed to self-study to skip to the APs

When people say “self study” in these forums, they typically mean taking an AP exam without taking the corresponding AP class. Such as taking the AP Environmental Science or the AP Psychology exam without taking either of those classes - you do the studying totally on your own. (Or you take a less advanced class, for example, taking AP World History while only enrolled in a normal World History class.)

Ask your guidance counselor. Hopefully she/he isn’t totally useless - my counselor told me to go to the other (academically worse) high school in my district if I wanted to test out of first year chemistry … /headdesk

Ask if there’s anything you can do to test out of these classes. If possible, talk to the teachers of Precalc and English II to see what you know and what you need to know (ask for a syllabus or a textbook or something). You may have to take a final exam from a previous year to show that you know what you’re doing, or some other sort of exit exam.

Precalc is basically an extension of Algebra II, at least at my school. Make sure you’re clear on your trig identities, things you can do with functions (transformations, compositions, etc.), quadratics/exponentials/polynomials, and other skills that will vary from class to class.

Something I did two summers ago ;)

When you self study AP classes, do you take the test with everyone in May, or do you take it in the summer? Also, what books do you use to self-study AP classes?

^you take it with everyone else in May. you might want to look at the test prep forums for more info.

Oh. Okay. I’m assuming people have to self-study over the school year…

For self studying you can always try to buy AP study guides at your local bookstore. Do the practice exams couple of times and learn from the solutions provided. During times that you are on the bus or something you can take advantage of the many free mobile study apps like the one found here:
