What is SMU's student population like, will I fit in?

Hi! I’ve been looking at the colleges that I’ve been accepted to and narrowing down my choices. SMU Cox is one of my top choices. I am really impressed with the flexibility SMU has to offer to it’s students and hope I can use that to the fullest potential. One thing I am concerned about is the SMU student community, I am an middle-class Asian male from Austin and with a more liberal mindset. I’ve seen the stats of 6-7% Asian, yet when I went to observe a Business class, a third of that specific class was Asian (I rarely saw any just walking around campus). I am not interested in fraternities, quite sociable and friendly to everyone, and dislike “hardcore” partying (if anything, I prefer smaller get-togethers with friends). Will I fit in at SMU? How is the Asian community at SMU? Thank you very much!

We have the same concern for our son. Asian from Northern California with SMU as one of his finalists under consideration. We’ll be flying out this weekend for the Destination SMU event to hopefully get a more accurate read, but would love to get a perspective from the posters here.

Per the common data set it shows 6-7% of SMU students are Asian. http://www.smu.edu/~/media/Site/ir/commondatasets/2014/CDS_2014-2015_Part_B_Enrollment.ashx?la=en

If your business class has 1/3rd Asians thats 33%. Wow. Interesting.

My son is at SMU and he isn’t part of the fraternity. SMU has a small greek life on campus and you can join if you want but you don’t have to. My son was just like you - he liked hanging around his friends and smaller groups. In short you can do whatever you’d like. My son really loves SMU.

SMU is a very friendly place and has a collaborative atmosphere too. It is a southern type school - where the atmosphere is warm and friendly.

Hope this helps.

@newjersey17 Thanks for your reply! It’s nice to hear that SMU is warm and friendly, with people like me. I was really surprised when I went to the class too, it was “Business Law”, there were 11 Asians out of the 31 total students that day, the class itself was quite interesting too

Hi @eric2019 I think you will fit into SMU very well. I am a current student at SMU Cox, and have really enjoyed my experience. There is a great organization on campus called Asian Council that you could get involved with on campus. They seem tight-knit and host various events on campus (concerts, selling boba tea, etc.) Everyone is really friendly here, and there’s so much to do on campus and in Dallas that you don’t need to be in a fraternity.
