What is steinhardt looking for in the portfolios?

If anyone has any input or advice, I'd really appreciate it

anyone out there?

Something unique. Produce anything you can that will set you apart. Don't put a lot of realistically rendered drawings/paintings in. Really be individual, the crazier the better. They want people who can think and be conceptual with their work, and are not looking for technical skill. In fact, if your portfolio is "boring" you will probably be rejected. Try to vary your media, with some 3 dimensional work, maybe some photography and graphics.

Basically just think and be different. They want to see something only you can do, and how you express yourself. If your portfolio lacks substance and only relies on "pretty" then well...you probably weren't meant to attend NYU.

thanks so much gEEe_whilikers, that's a huge help! I know they want 12-20 pieces.. does it matter if i only have 13 that i really want to include?

Hmmm, that's a tough one. Quality over quantity for sure, but why sell yourself short? If you have more pieces I say give yourself the benefit of a doubt because the artists who judge your work may like your least favorite pieces. I submitted 20 slides, and when they showed slides of our work during the first week of school they choose their 2 favorite ones of yours. They picked the 2 I thought were the worst, haha. I say put in everything you have if it doesnt exceed 20.
