What is student housing like at UNC?

Do people live on campus all four years? Or do you have to get an apartment?

All first year students are required to live on campus. Past that, however, there are no requirements. There are housing options for sophomores and upperclassmen, but they do fill up quickly. Often times after freshman year many people end up getting apartments or renting because many of the options are cheaper than on campus housing anyway.

Are you guaranteed housing for four years?

@livm714 Nope, everything is based on the housing app and it’s first come first served based on applications. UNC has too many students to guarantee housing all four years.

My daughter thought about living on campus her junior year… she applied for housing, got it, and then turned it down. She didn’t apply that early… it was kind of a last minute decision. I don’t know how common her experience is.

My son has lived on campus all 4 years. He is a senior now and he is a RA. This is his second year being a resident advisor and likes it. He has resided at Hinton James, Craige, and Carmichael. They were all great dorms.

It’s really up to you. I’d say it’s an even split, after the first year. My son loves living in Craige (We were terrified it would be filthy, given the nickname, but no reason to be!)- he is in one of the back rooms, which are larger. The front rooms in Craige, HoJo, E’Haus- I can only assume they were only meant for one student, but have been forced to accommodate two!
