For a student-athlete applying ED to a highly selective DIII school, is being supported more than just a letter of recommendation from the coach?
I read in another thread that those are not particularly effective.

Also, if you are told that you put on the list for ED1 to admissions, does that imply anything like a slot?

I know, I should have asked more persistantly. When I did, was told that there are no guarantees.

From what I’ve read on here, it depends on the school. Some (such as MIT) still rely heavily on the admissions criteria. In others, there may be more ‘pull’ from the coach. Did you ask how many of the ‘supported’ recruits get in? ED1 + coach’s support obviously make you a stronger candidate, but in some schools you’ll still have to have the stats to get in on your own; you’ll just gain an advantage over those who are equally qualified.

Sorry not to be more specific. I don’t know if anyone will be able to answer this question except for the admissions people and coach, and also, since all D3 schools are not the same, it’s hard to answer as a general question. The no guarantees would possibly prompt me to ask if you have other applications in for RD or early action at other schools, just in case.

Yes, I do have other RD apps in as backup, as well as another highly selective school, a LAC, that wants me to apply ED. I can do ED2 with them and not have any cocerrency.

When I asked asked if I would get in based on my stats, he said he wouldn’t have invited me to the OV if he didn’t think so, but again stated that there are no guarantees. He has been quite specific in directing me when to apply (ED) and what college, major toapply for. He also told me to be sure to retake all of my tests, which I had planned to do anyway. My SAT went from an 1830 to a 2040.

Perhaps I am overthinking this, but it would be nice to have a better fell for if I will get accepted.

Where do your stats fall with the rest of the applicant pool? Check the common data set/freshman profile at the schools web site.
If he told you to retake all of your tests–that is a flag.

Also, why is the coach telling you which college and major to apply for? Be sure this doesn’t prevent you from changing IF you get in and are unhappy in that major. You are going to college for the education and career development not for the sport, right?

No one, not even the coach can tell you what admissions will do—

kicker, it sounds to me like he really wants you in and really thinks you will get in (certainly the 2040 will be helpful, but was he happy with that?) What’s the “middle 50%” range? You can usually find that on college board’s website (don’t know if they’ll x out the name if I write it here) if you haven’t already. That should give you a good idea.

Sounds like you’ve done all you can and you’re looking for reassurance. Hopefully you won’t have to wait long and the news will be good. When do they notify?

I always like to believe that things work out the way they are meant to. If you’re meant to be at this school, you’ll get in.

No guarantees to me means a “tip” not a “slot”. He likes you, and has told admissions, but you aren’t getting full support, or it is a school that doesn’t really care (like certain sports at CMU)

Thanks to all for the info. The 25/75 perecntile for SAT at this school is 1290-1500. They notify on 12-15-10. I think the school and undecided major is being recommended to help my chances for admission. Transfers are available.
Doc, out of curiosity, what sports does CMU not care about?

Not sure it is a freebie! Am finding out this week if she can actually tryout w/rest of team or be “trying out” 2 weeks later, aka having a chance in heck of making the team!
I would say supported at Swarthmore is a very good sign! What sport?

Thanks radannie! The sport is track, but it didn’t seem like the coach was that interested. (Maybe they just said they’d support me to get rid of me I guess I will find out in a month?

CMU swim coach told my S they didn’t get any say, just told admissions they wanted certain students-“and some get in and some don’t” We were told that the swim team was not a priority.
