What is Texas Tech like, really?

I hope to attend Tech in the near future, and I was wondering if I could hear the opinions of current or past students concerning its academics. I know that there's a lot of talk about Tech being "inferior" to A&M and UT, or just a party school- but I don't think that's really fair, especially seeing as many of the people who say that haven't even visited Tech before. Well, what do you guys think of it? And if you have any information about their English programme or honours college, that would be of great aid as well. Thank you! :)

I haven’t been there, but it’s on my list of colleges to apply to along with A & M & UT. One of my history professors went there & of course highly recommended it. If I go however, I would only go if I was admitted to take Honors courses. My only negative from what I’ve looked into is it’s location & distance from anywhere else. From where I live in South Texas I could go to Tulane in New Orleans & the distance would be 1 hours difference!

Try the Texas Tech forum. I wouldn’t worry about an inferio education to UT or A&M. You’ll have all the resources to get as good of an education as you want and I’ve only heard good things about the honors program.

Yes, there is a new post by a transfer student to TT in the TT forum.

As to the caliber of academics at Tech, consider this: Tech along with UT Austin and A&M is the only public university in Texas with a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. PBK has stringent academic standards in the liberal arts and sciences that must be met before a chapter is awarded to a college or university. Google it up if you need more evidence. My son attended Tech’s Honors College and had a great experience.

Education is certainly not inferior at Tech, but is it a “party school”? I don’t think so. Consider its location in Lubbock. Texas Tech is located in a dry county on a dry campus. Sorry, but that is not going to make for a good party school in the least.

Texas A&M is a dry campus as well, but has a small, student-oriented nightlife district in Northgate. The entire community is a college town, and so parties are not hard to find off-campus either.

Texas is a wet campus and is located in Downtown Austin. This is really one of the ultimate party schools.

UT Austin is not in downtown Austin. Not far… but still not in downtown.
