I'm pretty sure Lehigh and Lafayette aren't LACs.

Well, Lafayette is, and Lehigh is in spirit but is technically just a small university.

froshdad...
Those are the correct numbers, I think.
I was giving some per student numbers. More meaningful than the gross.

Let me say something about the Amherst dorm tear down- build up.
I visited that dorm 5 years ago with my son on a college tour and was pretty shocked. It had the most out-of-date conditions of any dorms we saw on our tour.
Did another tour with my daughter last September. The new dorm keeps the exterior charm of the old but with modern living conditions. I should do for another 1-2 hundred years. Money well spent and done in a lovely way!

I stayed in one of those dorms my senior year of h/s. I forget exactly if it was James or Stearns. The rooms were spartan; no lounges; one-room doubles. But, perfectly serviceable. You say their succesors will "last another 1-2 hundred years." Well, the "old" James and Stearns were built in the 1940s. That means these two new ones should be ready to come down by the year 2050 or so.

Man, I couldn't disagree more on your take. Yeah, I guess you could use that dorm. But you wouldn't if if had a choice.
I don't have a vested interest in either Amherst or Wesleyan. Neither me nor my of kids (so far) have ended up at either one.
But the level of defensiveness about Wesleyan is extreme.

I've read several complaints about this tendency to label any dissent from the consensus opinion as "extreme". This seems to be fairly common at Williams. And, just for the record, I deplore it when it happens at Wesleyan, too. I apologize for all my shortcomings.

danas: you're completely right about the per-pupil endowment. i read your original list too quickly.

Most everything I hear says the Wesleyan is filled with happy students. I know that must be happening for some very good reasons.
