What is the answer they are looking for?

Here's the question:

Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you.

I've written 3 essays, and my criticism from others has ranged from I have just been rambling about randon things, to me just answering the question and not talking about myself enough.

What would a good response be? What should I include?

Unless you have ec's that relate to the issue you are discussing, I would stay away from this topic because there is the tendency for people to talk more about the issue than its effect on them.

The best response is the one that we can't give you. Write about something that is YOU. Don't overthink the question... just write naturally about what feels right.

I've tried the advice... wrote an essay, and I still haven't got it. People have read my essay and said, ehhhh.

I don't even know where to start... i'm having writers block. Can anyone help me? Does anyone want to comment on my essay?

i will if u want. whats it about?

i stayed away from this topic too, A2, after three failed drafts. i switched to the one on ethical dilemma. i feel that this topic is so boring people tend to write a newspaper article (save for the great wrtiers).

yeah, this topic's gonna be a tough one to pull off. Can you pick another?

Yea I'd give you the same advice. Pick another topic (if that's possible) unless the issue relates directly to you. For example, I chose this prompt. I wrote about the war in Iraq, but my dad served over there in the air force so it was a very personal essay. If you dont' have a personal perspective on the issue then i don't think it would be a good choice.

Here are the other 2 topics

[A] Describe a setback or ethical dilemma that you have faced. How did you resolve it? How did the outcome affect you? If something similar happened in the future, how would you react?

[C] Some writers suggest that by tradition science is concerned with truth while art is concerned with beauty. How might these two endeavors be the same? How might they be irreconcilably different?

I'd be clueless on [C], but ** sounds achievable.

writing about a creative work (art, science, music) that influenced you/shaped you.

worked for me!!

sure you can write about A, can't you? but i read form somewhere (though i may be wrong) that Umich don't place as much weight on essays...

My advice:

Write about a specific experience or accomplishment in YOUR life that shows something important about YOU.

Then, worry about which prompt best fits your essay.

For example, the prompt you gave is so general that it could be interpreted to fit almost any conceivable essay.

Hey A2Wolves6,

I'd be willing to read over your essay. However, don't expect me to be able to do it during the week as I have my own homework to get done, and I have to really budget my spare time now. I'd probably be able to get to it this weekend sometime though if you're interested.
