What is the average class size for freshmen?

Overall class sizes according to the Rice website are:

of students per class 2-9 10-19 20-29 30-39 40-49 50-99 100+

of classes that size...286....313....179......64.....32......79...14

What is the average class size for freshmen?

Let me direct this question to current Rice students and ask how big were your freshman classes?

My classes ranged from 14 to about 120, with all the rest somewhere in between. This year (as a sophomore) they ranged from about 9 to about 180.

You would get a better idea by going to:

and looking at what the class sizes are.

I'm not sure that there is such a thing as a "freshman" class. DD took classes with students of all different levels right from the beginning. Her favorite class this semester has only 5 students in it.

It looks like the some of the classes with 100+ students are introductory courses in Biology, Physics, Calculus, and Statistics.

If you can AP out of these courses, would it be worthwhile to do so? Is there material that they cover in these courses that they do not cover in high school that you will need in subsequent courses?

I know my son APed out of Calculus 1 and 2 and started in with Honors Calc 3 with no problems. From what I recall, he had <50 in his 3 and 4 classes last year. His Physics classes were lecture halls with 100+ students. I do believe they had smaller labs once per week. As a Math and CAAM major, he has been able to get right into core classes, which have been smaller in size. I view the lack of the normal gen-ed requirements to be a major plus at Rice.
