how big is the average class at UVA? and what do you like about UVA, why did you decide to go there?

Classes: I’ve definitely written about this before, here are some search results:

I picked 40 and 400 because 40 is average small class size and some classes get to 400-500 people

There are also a lot of threads on why people like UVA if you search.

My biggest class at UVA was econ201/202. They both had around 500 people in each lecture… but my classes this semester are a lot smaller. Most between 25-40, which is a lot more personal. Some of the classes in the art studio department are really small, most of mine have been 10 people tops, but I guess that is expected.

I decided to go UVA because first of all, UVA is ranked No. 2 public university in the nation…so I figured I’d get a quality education without paying a fortune by staying in Virginia. Plus I’ve had siblings go here, so I’m familiar with the school. But I still visited other colleges and considered other places, it’s not like the decision was made for me. In the end, I knew I didn’t want to be too far from home. I thought the campus was pretty. Also, I went to a small high school and so I wanted to go to a bigger college… just because the real world is really big, so I figured I might as well begin to make that transition. and the funny thing is while uva is a huge school I always run into someone that I know in some random way. It’s a really small world.

I’m in Econ 2010 with Elzinga right now and the class is large enough to fill the Chem Building auditorium but it doesn’t need the overflow room… so a little bit over 300 people, I believe. Bio 2010 is in the same room and is overflowing by 80 or so people.

Edit: Just to carry on to what Dzem said, UVA is a somewhat bigger college (not as big as some though!) and it’s easy to get lost in the system. But the people here are really nice and will really look out for you if you just ask for it.

My smallest class was 3 (including the prof.), and I never had a T.A. in college. I majored in History and Latin American Studies and minored in French.

Here are the last official stats I saw (they are about a year old). These are probably averaging classes across schools, though.

47% of classes have less than 20 students
86% of classes have less than 50 students
7% of classes are over 100 students

yeah, 7% of classes might have over 100 students, but a lot of students attend those classes

5 350 people classes might not look as dominant in those statistics as 30 20-ppl classes, you know?
