The plan for comm colleges is for people to complete 2 years and then transfer to 4-year colleges. The only issue is usually whether or not the credits from the CC will be accepted by four-year colleges. This may be easier if you transfer to a public univ in the same state as the CC.

It totally depends on the CC. In states like CA and Mich where there is a direct pipeline into their 4 year state schools, the transfer rate is high. In other states that don't have a direct CC to 4 year path, it's not great.

In CA the system really works in favor of the CC students. Many, many getinto UCs they could not have touched right out of high school. So the tradeoff is 4 year college experience or a degree from a better school. Each individual need to choose what's best for them. If you're planning to be a teacher or a nurse, it probably doesn't matter where you go. If you want law or business, it's probably worth the sacrifice of going to a CC for 2 years.
