What is the best LAC I could get into?

Stats:

SAT:
510 Math
670 CR
710 Writing

I really feel like I have to go somewhere that looks at the writing portion to override my horrendous math score.

Top 5% of class of about 400 people
3.7 UW GPA
4.0 W GPA
5 AP Classes (4 on English Lang., 5 on US History, taking English Lit, Euro, and Psych this year)

Weak in EC/Community service, but I've had a part-time job at a nursing home (12-16 hrs per week) since February 2007.

I live in NY but am willing to go anywhere in the Eastern half of the US.

I'd need much financial aid as well.

I plan on majoring in Political Science.

No college really looks at the writing section of the SAT. If you are a Junior I would strongly advise you to retake the SAT.

I am a senior.

There are actually quite a few LACs that look at the writing section, at least according to their College Board profiles.

Male or female? There are certainly more options if the latter.

Male. Unfortunately? lol

A few schools that have relatively low math SAT scores (and less of a math/science emphasis) compared to their rank are Vassar, Kenyon, Skidmore, and Wheaton (MA). If you aren’t averse to the unique nature of the school, St. John’s (MD) and its “great books” curriculum might be an option - it is very reading/writing intensive, less math/science oriented.

Have you thought about omitting your SAT scores altogether? With your strong grades and class standing, that might be your best bet. I know Bates, Bowdoin and Middlebury are SAT-optional. There is a huge list at [Optional List | FairTest](ACT/SAT Optional List for Fall 2025 - Fairtest)

Weak ECs probably argue against the SAT-optional choices in post #6, but you never know. The only way to make sure you don’t get in is to not apply. Try a couple of each.

I wouldn’t overlook places such as The College of Wooster and Earlham, either.

i suggest that you write an exceptional admissions essay, that would make a difference.

Voorhess, my mom works at the admissions department at Washu. She says most colleges do not consider the writing section of your SAT at all. You have to shine with your admissions essays. I would consider

Ripon College Redhawks
William Jewel College Cardinals
DePauw University Tigers
Ohio Wesleyan University Bishops

Males have an advantage when applying to LACs because it’s harder for LACs to attract males than females.

Thanks for all the responses. Out of all the colleges listed, DePauw, Kenyon, Skidmore, and Wheaton seem to be the most realistic based on SAT scores. Does anyone know if these are generous aid colleges?
