I am a high school senior attending college in the fall. I am attending the University of Delaware Honors program and am currently listed as a chemistry major. I plan on switching my major to either biochemistry or neuroscience and am not sure which to choose. Any help?

What kind of work do you want to go into after med school? If you’re planning on a neuro concentration, then neuroscience makes sense. Otherwise, if you’re not sure, you could always just go with Biology. That’s a safe bet.

there is no “best” major. the best major is one you want to do and can get a high GPA on that also knocks out medical school preliminary requisites. that said most med school students choose to follow the path of biology to medical school as it gives you a well rounded education to achieve your greatest potential on MCAT and in medical school.

Always tell the college counselor/who makes up your schedule you want the pre med track, he/she will hook you up with the standard pre requisites for admission to med school.

Make sure to get a good GPA and MCAT scores!

good luck!

Strictly speaking for medical school admission purposes, whatever you can get the highest GPA in.

Practically speaking, something that you are interested in, and/or which will prepare you for the likely possibility of not getting into any medical school.

I agree with Ultimablade. I don’t think there is a “best” major, but consider your strengths (chem? bio? bioengineering?) and what will provide you with the best possible application for med school admissions.
