What is the best school for gamers

I am considering minoring in Game Design, but NOT majoring in it. When I say gamers, I mean a large community of gamers. Of course there is going to be "that guy" who says "video games are bad mmkay", regardless I still want to go the a school with a some what good gamer community and less jock scene

The first college that comes to mind is Case Western. There are gamers at most colleges, but Case stood out. It is a great university for engineering or premed. I would not call it a “jock scene” by any means.

This is weird, and I don’t know what it stands for, but look up UAT in arizona… it’s a sort of “Alternative” Tech School, where game design, AI, robotics, and the more cool uses of compsci and engineering come to fruition… Never heard about it, the only time i’ve seen anything about it was at the college fair I just went to.

Carnegie Mellon has a major for it, so check to see if there’s a minor offered as well. This is a reach school for everyone though, but it’s the first one that came to mind for me.

A friend came back from CMU and described it as “the nerdiest place in the world,” so I’m going to go ahead and say that they lean more towards gamer on a gamer-jock continuum. I should add that I also know people who attend CMU and love it, so I don’t intend to bash the school by saying that. It is a great school.

[Game Design Major: Undergraduate Studies: Champlain College](Game Design Major | Undergraduate Degree | Academics | Champlain College | Burlington, Vermont)

Champlain College, Burlington, VT has it as a major.
University of Vermont also located in Burlington.

@Bobby

UAT is pretty crappy I hear, like one of those “TV commerical” colleges. If I got straight Cs then maybe xD."

CMU I would love to go to, but don’t have a chance…well maybe a slight reach but pretty much nope.

I will look at Case Western and University of Vermont, actually University of Vermont if it is a really big for gamers would be a high pick for me since I <3 skiing.

I did not say UVM had it, I said UVM is located in same city as Champlain College.

Rochester Institute of Technology.

^eeeek…

Caltech, MIT or CMU

@hd1990

I have no chance to those places :)

@jingle
RIT actually I was highly considering, just that it is expensive just scares.

If not Caltech, maybe Georgia Tech (it’s bigger, more students).

Major in Computer Science or Computer engineering. I’m sure that you’ll find many with the same interests as yours. Any school with this major will have a sizable gamer community.

@averby

I probally will, even though I wanted to major in Business Management to become a Video Game Producer, Computer Science could be a better way of entering in the industry.

I’m researching the same thing for my son. Some schools are heavily into the art of design, these also have programming.

Some colleges with game design programs:
Rensselaer
Georgia Tech
WPI
UT Dallas
Baylor
UC Irvine
Drexel
RIT
DigiPen
DePaul
UC Santa Cruz
George Mason
Daniel Webster
DeVry
Full Sail
Carnegie Mellon - Graduate level

Some colleges with game design courses:
Rice
Northwestern
U Michigan
Texas A&M

Good luck!

lissajous: You can add USC to the list. But the OP wants a gaming community, not a gaming major. Any tech school will provide a gaming community. Also, go to school in the SF Bay Area and you will find a large local gaming community. San Jose State would be a good choice or Santa Clara Univ. My son also drives up to SF State for tournaments.

I would second the suggestion to look in to Carnegie-Mellon. I heard it has great game-specific design programs and the kind of community you want.
