Two of my major summer plans fell through so now I have nothing to do for about a month during the summer. Just great.

I’ve been emailing a bunch of professors to see if I can get a summer internship/research opportunity. Maybe you should try that? I know a lot of people will say it’s way to late, but I doubt local professors need to know months and months in advance.

Other than that, I’ll probably volunteer at a local library or work on my portfolio.

Well… I’m not in college… I don’t know any professors. ^^;

No, you don’t have to be in college to intern for one. I personally know 3 high school kids who got internships just by emailing professors at a local university.

@kcdecember, go for it! I emailed in early June and still got something, so it’s definitely not late. Be prepared to email more than a few profs though…I had to email around 30.

Wow 30? I’ve only emailed 3 so far. Did you use the same email template for all of them? None of the ones I contacted have even replied so far. Will you look over my email through a PM? Thanks.

Oh wow, that’s cool. I’ll try it out So basically I could just Google random (local) colleges, find professors on the site and just e-mail them?

Yup, that’s all there is to it. There are two other threads that go more into depth about it:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/1063234-how-apply-independent-research-internships.html

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/834923-would-unprofessional-if-i-email-professors-asking-internship.html

Of course, it’s not easy to find a professor that is willing to take on a high school kid, so try to sound very persuasive, enthusiastic, etc. in your email.

Okay, cool! Thanks! Would these be paid internships?

And even better question- if I were interested in medical research but I haven’t taken AP Bio or AP Chem yet… is it still possible or am I totally screwed? Just based off what I’m reading in the thread so far.

Don’t expect them to pay you. You should be happy if they even accept you.

And it really depends. Some profs are ok with that, others like more experience.

Update: A Yale professor emailed me back and offered me the internship! It’s unpaid, but I think the experience will be worth it. I am surprised that I got something so quickly; I’ve only contacted 3 professors so far. I think they love it when high school kids show this sort of initiative.

That’s AMAZING kcdecember! Lucky! I would love to have an internship under a Yale professor…

I’m curious, do you live near Yale? In case there were a way I could get out-of-state internships… that’d be amazing.

Oops, I should have said professor with a PhD FROM Yale offered me an internship, not AT Yale. Sorry for the mix up. I guess I was too excited. :)

I think they love free labor, but that’s besides the point I also got lucky and landed 2 internship offers in the last 48 hours (they’re both paid) :D

@kc: Ah… that’s still pretty amazing! :)

@Lanayru: That’s also amazing! Lucky! :)
