What is the best way to go?

Okay, so I know that I need SOME kind of leadership on my resume, but I don't think I can do everything, so I was wondering which of the following you think that colleges would appreciate the most:

NHS (hopefully with some kind of important position haha)

Key Club (I'm not sure about this one....I don't if I would get a good position, considering I'm not going to all of the leadership camps and stuff that they have set up)

El Paso City Youth Council (I'm not sure if I'm in though...I haven't sent in the application and letter of rec yet)

WE Fill in the Blank (basically a club that organizes political debates and forums for my high school)

I don't know if colleges would consider this to be leadership, but I am in involved in my youth group, and we do a lot of fundraising and stuff

Thank you for reading!

Colleges don’t really care what you do specifically. One cookie-cutter club doesn’t look better than any other. Just pick what you like the best.

Whether you need actual leadership positions probably depends on what schools you are applying to. Aside from the top 50, I wouldn’t really even worry about it. and some of those top 50 don’t care either. Depends whether the school has a “holistic” admissions approach. Grades and scores are THE most important thing. After that, colleges want to know how your talents and involvement will contribute to campus life.

In short, do things you are interested in, especially things you plan to keep doing in college, and let the colleges know what these things are.

Admissions officers are familiar with resume’ padding, and it’s not worth much. Convey in your applications what your true interests are, how you have pursued those interests, and why you are a good fit for their community. That may or may not include formal leadership positions. It could be something like tutoring a younger neighbor and acting as a role model and mentor to him.

I do think the city youth council thing sounds cool, though :).

And yes, you can of course include youth group. Especially emphasize if you have coordinated a fundraiser or helped with recruiting new members or had other significant responsibility.

i would think maybe youth group is a little risky to add on college apps

Thank you all so much for you advice

@clementines2016 I probably will anyways though, just because it’s such an important part of my life…but thanks for bringing that to my awareness, I didn’t think that religion was a factor at all in college acceptance…

Church youth group is pretty benign, in my opinion. Can’t see why a college would find it objectionable in any way.

you don’t know who’s reading your application. i would be careful about anything religious.

and that’s what my teachers and gc have said, so yeah
