-CMU Mellon College of Science at full sticker price or;

-RPI School of Engineering w/ $50K scholarship.

There is a lot to consider. Most importantly, I originally applied to both for engineering, but was waitlisted at CMU's engineering school. RPI has better programs in the field I am most interested in (Nuclear Engineering), but CMU offers more options in terms of non-science courses, and would give me a less "training-oriented" education. CMU also appears to have a more diverse student body and is in a MUCH better location. I also plan on going to graduate school for Physics, which is what I would study if I went to CMU.

Both schools are very well respected; I haven't met a single person who has graduated either institution and wasn't extremely well off. Rankings mean nothing to me. The testimonials of empolyers and employees speak far louder. The academic rigor and quality of the schools is essentially the same, as are the research and employment opportunities.

$50K is nothing to sneeze at either. Money isn't a big issue for my family, but $200K for an education isn't trivial for anybody. That said, my parents offered to let me use the extra $50K to do something to enrich myself, like a trip around the world, or a new car.

So there you have it. From a pure consumer standpoint, RPI wins hands down. Someting still tells me I'd have a better college experience at CMU, but in the same vein, my instincts tell me I'd be in a better position to pursue my academic interests at RPI. I'm going to be revisiting both schools in the near future.

What do people here consider to be the best value? Where would I get the most for my money?
