What is the big deal with Spring Admission?

There seems to be a lot of talk about being admitted in the spring. I have been admitted in the spring, and I was very glad just to be admitted because I know lots of reallllly smart people who are at the top of the class who got rejected completely. So, is it really that bad?
Also, besides the fact that you "officially" start Berkeley one semester later, is it really that different? I mean if you sign for the FPF, then
1. you can most likely live on campus
2. you can take a lot of your classes on campus
so, pretty much its as if you are in berkeley without officially being in. and in reality, out of a total of 8 semesters, you are only not officially in for 1 of them. is that reallly that terrible, i mean i really dont understand that for a college that is as tough as berkeley to get into, why spring admission is so saddening.

I would really appreciate it if former Spring admits could share their views about it, do you feel like an outsider, or what, is it the same, how is it pretty much from an insider's pov. thanks so much

No, its not bad at all. I think people are upset about it because they have fragile egos and they think they've been slighted in some way. I hear alot of people saying things like they thought Berkeley was their saftey school and now that they only got spring admit the feel like its an insult to their ability.

hmm, im from out of state, so i guess that makes a difference. its pretty tough to get into berkeley from out of state i think since they take state residency into acct. For ppl here in tx, they find it pretty commendable just to get in to the best public school in the nation.

People just usually have this image of kissing their mom and pop goodbye and starting class in the fall and all that junk. I dunno, I'd be glad to get in at all, you know?

What is FPF? From what you are saying, Pulkit, it sounds like you can take classes in the fall and even possibly live on campus starting in the fall even if you are admitted for Spring 07? My D got in this way and will not be going to UCB, but I'm curious how it works. If you decide to take it as a semi-gap year, how does that affect your chances for getting a dorm space in the spring? I think it could make for some interesting work/travel experience to start in the spring.

you can most likely live on campus

most likely, yeah, but there's no guarantee. + you only get 1 yr of guaranteed housing after frosh year. and you most likely get triples for first year.

you can take a lot of your classes on campus

actually, most FPF classes are held off campus, in a separate building a few blocks away (acc. to the website).

++can't compete on some teams, very limited class selection, and a lot of stress for fragile egos. c'mon, we're in high school. who isn't insecure? ;)
