I'm thinking about buying a 42" LCD flatscreen for my dorm room. Do you think that is too big? If so, what would be the best size?

I had a big 27" CRT back in ye olde days. I wouldn’t dare have anything larger than that.

Heck, I’m looking at getting a 40" LCD for my apartment’s living room and even that feels pretty large (and ridiculously expensive).

I wouldn’t go above 27" in a dorm. Space is limited, and even if it fits, you don’t want to be watching TV on a 42" TV from 3 feet away.

NONE Too Time wasting

I would say 32 at the absolute most, 42 is way too big.

Are you kidding me?! 42 inches is HUGE. And that would cost a s—load.

I have a 19 inch with a built in DVD player and it feels huge. Barely had anywhere to put it in my dorm. I used my desk but anything bigger than what I had would have taken up way too much room.

And it’s not too distracting. I barely watch my TV when I’m alone. Only once or twice a week when my favorite shows come on. I usually only use it when my friends come and we watch tv or movies together since I’m the only one with a TV.

Just use a computer with a TV tuner. You need all the space you can get.

I’ve heard rumors that someone in my dorm for this year is bringing a 60". I’m hoping it’s just a rumor.

^ LOL

27" is probably the max. There’s barely any freakin’ room for anything besides your bed and desk at my dorm. -_-

You guys must have really small dorms if you can’t fit a large TV. If you get a flat panel you can mount it on the wall and it won’t take up any room.

you can’t mount a tv on the wall of a dorm room…

“mount it on the wall”

Say hello to like a $600 fine.

There are non-destructive ways to mount a TV on the wall without actually drilling into the wall. Or get a low-profile stand and put it on top of your dresser or something.

enlighten us on how to mount a tv on the wall in a “non-destructive” way

you are a t-sip for sure…

Unless you know the exact layout and exactly where you can put the TV I would wait until you knew the layout of the room before you blow your money on a huge ass TV that might not even fit.

Also, I find it amusing that kids who haven’t even started college yet are trying to tell others what would fit in a dorm room. Funny. :D

Instead of cluttering your walls with posters of cars and fake chested girls, why not leave it empty? and use it as a projector screen?

Case in point- I had a 90’’ TV. beat that.

That doesn’t sound remotely watchable.

I would say 26" (flat screen) would be a good size, 32" is pushing it. 32" would the absolute maximum. 42" is just plain unnecessary, far more expensive, and wouldn’t fit well within the size of your room, unless your room is rather large compared to the average dorm. It depends too on how your room layout will be, too, which you won’t know until you get there.

My room this year is 9’7" x 13’10" (a single), and I have a 22" TV. Seeing people who had that size room, it seems like a good fit, but the max I would go is 26". In a room that was about 12’6" x 14", someone had a 32" flat screen. It was an okay fit, but I cannot see anyone going over that. That itself almost took over the room, and it was really awkward watching it because of the position they had the futon.

And yeah, you can mount a big LCD to a wall without drilling in to it. You just might wake up one morning to find your nice TV broken because it fell off the non-secure method.

So personally, I think 26" is a good fit for most rooms, 32" the maximum. You might want to do like some have suggested, and just wait until you move in to see where you’re positioning everything, where the TV would go, then head-out and purchase a TV that would go well.

I had a 20" 720P tv that I bought back in high school for my room.

It’s a good TV for 360 because of it’s high resolution.

But I’d rather have a bigger TV. I’m personally looking to upgrade to a 42". 37-42" is perfect size for a dorm room.

I assume that you want to play video games on it. If not, and you just want it for tv and movies, I’d recommend something smaller. But the 42" is a great size for multiplayer gaming in a dorm room.

Because a 90" TV isn’t something most people want. Especially in a shared 200 square foot room.

I don’t think I’ve read a single post of yours that didn’t make you come off as a total tool.
