I just got deferred, but seems like everyone on CC got deferred........
i don't really think i have a chance with RD
the pool's just going to be sooo competitive...
this is so sad....
I think Deferred = gentle Rejection
:(

exactly!!!

Do they just defer everyone? They said in my deferral letter that deferred applicants have an acceptance rate comparable to the overall acceptance rate...

I heard it is about 10%.
I don't think I'd go to Columbia even if they accepted me now.
I don't know what I was thinking.

i would love to go to Columbia.

Yeah, Captain Falcon...I actually think I would rather go to NYU, Georgetown, or Harvard now..I really think I deserve to be acepted but whatever, go deferrees! Ugh, now I just have to wait four months to hear back from everywhere now!

soo.. those of us deferred, what can we really do? like should we send in anything else?

This is historically true.

Ya right.

I'm actually applying to NYU as well...Penn is my second choice, followed by NYU.

co2002-do they mean, 10% of deferred kids get in? like out of the deferred pool? i'm confused as to what they mean

i am so sad,
this was basically my last chance.
now with all the people in RD, i don't have any chance

i dont see the point of a deferral...what are they going to get from an application that they've already looked at before and couldn't accept?
and whats wrong with NYU? besides the 50k price tag

I got deferred too....still trying to be hopeful though. If there's no point in deferring, then why do they do it? A lot of people do get rejected outright, so I'm thinking there must be some kind of point in deferring. Maybe it's just me trying to hang on to a Columbia dream blasted to pieces today...

by deferring us it makes them appear to have more applicants for Rd and thus be more selective. Well at least we have options now..I for one think it could be a good thing. After reading up on the social life at Columbia, I am not so sure it was necessarily the best thing for me.

Let me put it this way...if you are deferred they put your application in with all those applying under regular decision. So all those that got deferred under early decision for a particular ivy league school most likely will be applying to all the other ivy league schools now that they are deferred. All I am trying to say is that it is now much more difficult to get in. Personally, if I was deferred, which I find out tomorrow for Penn (wish me luck!), I would hope for the best, but would seriously consider other schools.

I was a Penn Legacy,
but still Columbia was my first choice.
I don't regret having applied to Columbia.
I am just scared now. Because in RD, I don't think the legacy status is going to play upon my advantages when I am applying because RDs at IVY leagues are just going to be insane.
Also, especially because I think one of the guys at my school probably would have gotten in.
I seriously seriously wanted go to Columbia.
i am not putting any hopes in for deferral. Stupid SAT score

I, personally, am honored to have not been rejected outright, and see this as something to further motivate me this year. There is still hope!! Sure, my chances of ED at other fantastic schools may have been much higher, but I love Columbia too much to have not done it. No regrets, and still a substantial shard of hope!
Congratulations you guys, we will all be going to college next year!

I have this feeling that they defer everyone who even stand a chance at getting accepted -- which is like the majority of the applicants. I really wanted to go to Columbia, and anything I think/say now about how Columbia isn't that great, other places are better, etc etc. really just ways to make myself feel better.

@hopeful: yeah, I agree. RD is going to be so much tougher... I'm afraid that I won't get into any schools, considering the low acceptance rates these days. Life sucks.

From what i've heard and seen at other colleges, for ED they accept around 23-25% of applicants, they defer an equal % and then reject about 50%. The 25% that they defer is comparable to the average RD pool of applicants and so they then take 10% of those deferred.

yeah. i really don't think im gonna get in now... :'(
