thank you

A weighted GPA is when you get extra points for taking a more rigerous courses (example: AP, Honors, IB).

Your unweighted GPA is your straight average and would probably be much lower than your weighted gpa.

However, when it comes to Elite college admissions, they use your unweighted GPA because there is already an expectation that a student is taking the most rigerous courses that their school offers (as indicated on their school profile).

and how do i calculate the extra points for my honors and IB clases???

Weighting is done by your high school (if they do weighting - some don't). Check your student handbook or with your counselors to find out how your school calculates GPA.

If your school doesn't weight, that's fine. That information will be included in your school profile or your counselor's recommendation.

Different schools use different systems, but you could say APs equal 6, honors equal 5, and regular classes equal 4. However, it won't tell you much, since you won't know your class rank.

On a 4.0 scale..

Unweighted: A=4, B=3, etc.

Weighted AP/Honors/IB: +1 to grade point if it is A, B, or C. (ie. A=5, etc.)
Most colleges will use your unweighted grades and then use their own formulas to rank the strength of an individual's GPA in order to normalize the way different high schools do GPA.
