What is the difference between a Jesuit college...

and a Catholic college?

Jesuit schools are just one kind of Catholic college. They are run by the Jesuits, one order of priests.

There are two kinds of priests in the Catholic church. One type is a diocesean (spelling?) priest. These are priests affiliated with a particular geographic area or diocese. A priest who becomes a priest of the diocese of Boston in most cases will spend all of his priestly career working in Boston. These priests take a vow of celibacy. They do NOT, however, take a vow of poverty. Thus, they can own property in their own names, etc.

Then there are priests within orders. Each order has its own rules, which spell out its mission. Some orders specialize in teaching, others in social work, others in missionary work, etc. Order priests are responsible to their superiors within the order. They can be transferred to a different job anywhere on the earth that the order does work. They take vows of celibacy, poverty and obedience. They usually live in a situation in which they live with other members of their orders. They cannot own property in their own names.

The Jesuits are one of best known of the orders. They require a lot of schooling to take final vows and thus most Jesuits are very intelligent and do not take final vows until they are in their mid-30s. They tend to be intellectuals, whereas many parish priests are not.

Notre Dame is a Catholic college. It is not a Jesuit school because it is not run by the Jesuit order. Georgetown, Fordham, Holy Cross, among others, were historically at least Jesuit schools.

There are many other orders of priests, e.g., the Franciscans and Dominicans.

Darn. I saw this and was hoping it was another "What's the difference between a chicken?" joke.

You ask someone "What's the difference between a chicken?" and then enjoy watching their annoyance grow -- "Waddaya mean what's the difference between a chicken, a chicken and what...what kind of question is that...between a chicken and what...?" and you repeat the question until one of you can't stand it anymore and then you give them the answer...

One of the legs is both the same.
