What is the difference between a program of study and a major?

I thought that a major in the program of study but I’m not sure.

Many schools use them interchangeably, so they are often the same thing.

But some schools use ‘program of study’ to talk about all of their study programs - majors, minors, concentrations, joint degrees, certificate programs, etc. So in those cases, a major is a type of program of study.
