Hi, one of the schools I am interested in offers and honors program. I know what an honor college is and would be interested in applying to one if it was available at the school I am applying to. But it is not, they only offer an honors program. Is an honors program the same thing as honors college? Would I still be able to purse a degree in science?
Here is a link to the page http://www.georgefox.edu/catalog/undergrad/curriculum/honors.html
Honors program or college is just a marketing name chosen by the school. Focus on what they actually provide, not what they call it.
The link you gave points to a program that provides a common core of required classes where you take the same class each semester as others in your year in the program. Since they just list 51 hours of credit, and a link on that page says it takes 126 hours min to graduate, about 60% of the classes you take will be ordinary George Fox classes.
You’ll need to decide if this is what you want in your college education. Take a look at the web page for other honors programs to see what alternatives are out there.
Actually, there IS a difference.
An Honors College has a budget and often a Dean. It offers specific classes, not just one per semester but a variety of choices and with its budget can pay professors to provide special programs and support that an Honors Program can’t.
Class sizes tend to be smaller in Honors Colleges than in Honors Program and the big distinction is in how many classes are offered, both for your major’s choices but also for your general education requirements.
This program is a traditional “Western Civ” program but from a conservative evangelical perspective.
Are you applying to evangelical colleges such as Calvin, Wheaton (IL), Pepperdine, Point Loma, even Baylor and Hope…? What made you look into George Fox?
I confess I have limited knowledge of various honors programs and honors colleges, but I feel @mikemac is correct and you should focus on the specifics of what a particular school offers, as opposed to what they call it.
My son is in the Campus Honors Program at UIUC and it sounds more like an honors college based on MYOS1634’s description.
Thank you so much for the response @MYOS1634 I am interested in George Fox because it is a small school and it is really big on faith and God. Several members of my family attended and loved it (of course that was about 2 decades ago) I am not applying to other evangelical schools. Just GFU
Either you’re big into GFU’s ethos and then you should apply to several others with similar ethos, or you’re just applying because it was a good fit for others. It’s such a different, specific college (in the way religious colleges are) that it requires you to think which it is for you. You have to think it through - either it’s for you or it’s not.
What other colleges are you applying to? Are you hoping to get into the others’ honors college/program? Have you investigated the Christian groups on those campuses?
