What is the difference between BFA in music and BM?

Carnegie Mellon offers a BFA in music and other schools offer a BM. Is a BFA less prestigous than a BM? Thanks!

A detailed explanation is here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/561184-help-understanding-ba-vs-bfa-vs-bm.html

In general, the BFA is “closer” or more akin to a BM.

The best comparison is to look at the specific degree requirements for each degree type at each institution under consideration.

thanks Violadad - the link was very helpful!

There are a few posts that cite percentages of distribution, but I’m having a hard time finding them. I know both BassDad, myself, and a few others have cited them.

These are general, and I’ll post the links if I find them:

BA: 25-45% of required coursework within the major, the rest required general academics and electives.

BFA,BS, and BM: The percentages swing, with 65-75% (maybe a bit more) within the major requirements, and the rest in required general academics. Typically there is not much room for free electives.

These will vary by school. One BA can approach another’s BM, so it pays to look at the detail by degree path within each.

Here’s a link to the differences at Lawrence for illustration: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1062010675-post6.html
