Hi,

Last semester I had signed up for HADM 2225 - Finance (the one for non-majors) in order to supplement my intended major in economics. I read the class description and it seemed ideal for any future internships or careers in the financial sector. However, since I was also signed up for Econ 3140 (which I need for my major), I ran into a problem when Econ 3140 all of a sudden decided to change the time it will be held to the same time that HADM 2225 is being held. As a result, I have to give up HADM 2225. Now I am looking for another finance related course to take in place of it and I came across AEM 2210 - Financial Accounting. Based on its description, it seems similar to HADM 2225 but I am not sure what the difference is. Also, which one is better suited for an internship in finance? (My gut tells me AEM 2210 is more suited for accounting jobs but I might be wrong.) Thanks for the help.

For a finance internship you should honestly have both accounting and Corporate finance. Financial accounting teaches you about financial record keeping, and metrics for analysis. It is really the basis of all finance, and I almost think you may struggle in Corporate finance without taking accounting first.

There are a few part of the class that overlap, but corporate finance will teach you about valuation, and finding the present/future value of companies/cash flows/stocks/etc, as well as many other things.

If you want to work in finance, I would take both. Any financial company wants to see a demonstrated interest in the field, and both as seen as essential courses. That being said, I know history majors with no finance coursework that got internships.

Thanks alot. I remember trying to sign up for that AEM class during add/drop last semester ( I was a freshman) and it said I needed special permission. During add drop in the end of August, will I be allowed to sign up for it now since I am a sophomore and most AEM majors that wanted the class has signed up for it and space is no longer an issue. If I can’t sign up for it, do I just attend the lecture and then ask the professor is there some kind of slip I need for him to add me into the class?
