What is the difference between NYU and NYU Polytechnic Institute?

I'm confused because I looked up the schools on Naviance and they come up as two different schools. Both offer Engineering but NYU has a student population of over 20,000 students and NYU Polytechnic has a student population of under 2,000 students. NYU also seems harder to get into than NYU Polytechnic. So when I apply, am I suppose to apply for the regular NYU school or the NYU Poltechnic Institute. Which one is better for engineering?

Come on guys, one of the 300+ people that viewed this must know something.

NYU and NYU Polytech are two different schools. NYU Poly is in a merger agreement with NYU (hence the NYU in the name) however, their acceptance is different and they have different supplements on Common App. Generally, NYU Poly is more known for Engineering and Tech majors while NYU covers everything else. And you are right, NYU Poly is much smaller and is located in Brooklyn and has average SATs that are about 200 points lower than the average for NYU. Also, the amount of views on this thread is way off lol

btw, pls chance me for NYU at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/new-york-university/1413059-chance-me-nyu-stern-edii-pls.html

^ No, they’re both NYU now. The merger passed last month. Poly is basically NYU engineering now.

My D is looking at NYU Poly. It would help with a decision to go there if this is true or if “agreement to merger was passed” means they are now the same university.

Do you (or anyone) have a good link to more information? I could only find old news on the future merge so far via Google. My understanding was an agreement to merge was “passed” long ago, however the merger is not yet complete and it is 3 or 4 years away.

From the NYU website, it is part of the university’s list of schools and colleges.

Consolidation into New York University
[Polytechnic Institute of New York University - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](New York University Tandon School of Engineering - Wikipedia)

“It has been confirmed by the school authorities that the interim Polytechnic Institute of NYU is on the path to being completely consolidated into NYU as its School of Engineering and Technology by 2014, similar to that of NYU College of Arts and Sciences, Stern School of Business, Tisch School of the Arts, u School of Culture, Education, and Huma Development, Gallatin School of Individualized Study, and other NYU schools.”

NYU in Manhattan does not have engineering.

Ok thanks. From your links I found the NYU Merger fact sheet which spells out everything. October 2012 the Trustees voted to complete the merger by 2014 (the merger was not completed). So freshman entering 2013 will have hopefully will graduate from NYU - School of Engineering and Technology.

http://www.nyu.edu/content/dam/nyu/publicAffairs/documents/PDF/NYU-NYU-Poly-fact-sheet.pdf

**From the fact sheet. **

Next Steps

• In Oct. 2012, the Trustees of each institution authorized the schools to undertake the final set of steps necessary to complete the merger and make NYU-Poly NYU’s school of engineering.
o Announced to each community
o Process to be completed before Sept. 2014
• That process will include internal consultations – with the Faculty Senators Council and University Senate, among other bodies – and external approvals.

Hey! I am glad to see this question. I am planning to go to Poly too next fall (senior). About 2 weeks ago NYU Counselor came to my school and aksed him about POLy, he said it will the “NYU Polytechninc school of Engineering” i.e. official NYU school of engineering, beginning Next Year ( 2014 term ). So if you go to Poly this year, you will still graduate with NYU degree.

So basically your final certificate would be from Nyu itself ??

Yeah. After the merger on January 1 2014, Poly will cease to operate as an independent institution, becoming NYU’s Polytechnic School of Engineering, and all degrees earned after that date will be granted by NYU.

Yes. I second that ^.Poly kids will be getting an NYU degree starting 2014.

We just finished a formal tour at NYU, on April 1st, and I asked about the merger and it’s impact. Basically, the admissions counselor recommend applying to both schools. It depends on when you apply and which school accepts you. My recommendation is to contact the admissions office at Poly and they can give you more information. My impression is that welcome talking to prospective students.

If students are applying next year to Poly, they have to use the NYU application and select NYU’s school of engineering.
