what is the easiset way to transfer

hi, i have one quick question, is it easier to transfer to a top school from a community college or a university, or is it the same, and can someone please tell me if they look at anything other than your gpa,and how high it should be for nyu,or rutgers, thank you for your help.

It is generally easier from a 4 year college because the difficulty of coursework is more comparable than from a CC. However, there are exceptions, such as transferring from a CCC to a UC.

Read the sticky thread at the top of this forum: Transfer Admissions 101.

there are plenty of examples of people on here who prove that going to a CC doesn’t mean you’ll be going to a state university. basically, if you had great grades in high school and great grades in a CC or state university, then it shouldn’t be too difficult to transfer. i know that this is a very general explanation, but I felt the need to defend CCs and CC transfers.

examples : http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/703771-community-college-students-where-you-transferring.html

mocha,
No need to defend CC transfers, at least to me (CCC => Cal '75). But please read the OPs question and my answer carefully, as a matter of degrees, it is “generally easier” to transfer to a “top school” from a 4 year college. This isn’t to say that there aren’t plenty of CC transfers to top schools or that everyone goes from CC to their state college, but the statement is still true.

from what ive read, from a university is easier in most cases, with exceptions in the state of california and florida.

I’ve read that Stanford specifically looks for (California) CC students.

it definitely depends :)

i read this article(or cc thread, dont remember) written by a guy who was a professor at one of NYC’s best CC’s. and when he was writing, 2 students from there had just gotten into brown that semester, as well as 1 to yale… and many many others to top schools  i guess a lot of CC’s have better reps that some 4years… if youre going to a crap 4year, then maybe its better to go CC? spec cuz its cheaper…

it depends on A LOT of things…
EC’s , grades, recommendations, passion for the target school, essays… and just the general person you seem to be  sometimes even an interview :)

college_ruled, I’m pretty sure they don’t look just at Californians; I have four (yes, four) friends there right now from CCs, and we’re from the East Coast.

ns89, you’re right about certain community colleges having outstanding transfer reputations. The one I went to regularly puts students into Yale, Brown, Amherst, Cornell, etc., and I know of many others that do the same. It’s usually the community colleges that are more liberal arts-focused, rather than being all about career programs. Honors programs at the colleges can help a lot, too.
