The schedule of classes start on Aug 26, but the schedule says Fall semster begins on the 19th (this Thursday). I was wondering, what is that all about? Is it just an introduction to Berkeley, clubs, showing newbies around etc., or something that I really shouldn't miss? (Assuming in in SoCal and would have to hurry, pack/unpack, and drive to make it for the first week).

It’s mainly for socialization and welcome week events. It’s fun but I wouldn’t say it’s really important.

Make sure you go to Caltopia and take some free stuff :P

Since movein day for freshmen in the dorms is Aug 22 (or 21 for some), the real start of the semester for new students is then.

It’s welcome week. I would recommend coming up at least by that weekend (the 21/22nd). There are cool things to go to, if you’re living in the dorms you can bond with your floor, etc. There’s not much reason to arrive before that.
