Topic Question. I think many of us new admit-ees into the honors program a bit confused/left with unanswered questions because of the limited information given concerning the honors program. So what do all of you current students think of it?

NYU's "honors" programs shouldn't be confused with those at state schools and other universities. Basically, at NYU you pretty much take the same classes as everyone else (there are a few exceptions like freshmen honors seminars...but even those, anyone can take with an advisor's permission). Also, there are no honors dorms at NYU.

Basically, it entails a merit scholarship, and depending on the school, a free trip abroad, perhaps some other stipends. You also might be get to go some events sponsered by the dean's office of your NYU school.

How/when could I know if I will be in the honors program?

Again, there is really no "honors" program per se. There are things like presidential honors scholarships...but this is merit money, not some separate course of study. CAS has things like freshmen honors seminars, and departmental honors programs once you declare a major. Stern has Stern Scholars. However, there is no NYU honors college like there would be at state schools like UMich, Rutgers, etc.

can you apply for honors after your freshman year?
w/what avg?

yeah, is it possible, if i've only received the CAS scholarship for 10 grand, to work really hard and compete for the 25000 one next year?

If you haven't been admitted to the honors program, is it really hard to get into a Freshman Honors Seminar? Is there usually enough room left for regular CAS students to attend? (I heard that the Seminars are small, and obviously Honors students are given priority)

"If you haven't been admitted to the honors program, is it really hard to get into a Freshman Honors Seminar?"

Not at all...many regular students in CAS take Freshmen Seminars (the Honors part is in name only, these classes are open to all with permission from an advisor). There are over 60 of these seminars, even with an average enrollment of 20-25, it shouldn't be hard for your average CAS frosh to take one....and MANY do, as these courses are taught by some of the most distinguihed faculty at NYU, including President Sexton.

Here is a list of seminars from this past fall (keep in mind, course offerrings vary from year to year):

thanks!
are the honors seminars one semester each or a whole year long?
(can I take one seminar fall semester and a different one spring semester?)

I believe they are one semester and offerred in the fall, but I'm not sure, check with NYU.
