I’m a freshman, currently planning to major in Applied Mathematics with a specialization in computer science and I was wondering if there are any math majors out there who could give me an insight on what they did in college to secure a job when they graduated with a bachelor’s degree. What field did you end up in?
I’m afraid I was merely a CS major (and math/stats minor.) You shouldn’t have a problem finding a job with an Applied Math degree with a specialization in CS. If you were graduating today, I’d say look for jobs involving Data Science or Machine Learning. You could also get a straight Software Engineering job, but it probably wouldn’t make much use of your math skills.
When my son was looking to go into engineering we also had him meet with the head of the math department at University of Chicago to review what he could do with a math degree. His answer was basically anything! He said there are so many different directions you could go that would always be in demand. . I think with a little research you will find out what I mean.
