What is the largest class in one classroom at any college or university? (Not counting on-line or remote viewers.)

At Penn State, i’ve seen one of the Economics or Comm classes peak 770 (!).

I was in a class with over 1000 students. It was held in our auditorium.

The largest class at my University is general chemistry, which is held in an auditorium that seats about 175. The classes cap at 110 students but are rarely filled past 90.

@Irvine, I can’t imagine being in a class with 1000+ people! What type of class was it?

The largest class at a college or university depends on the overall size, and the number of profs and stuff. I’m going to a small LAC, so the absolute largest is something like 75 max I think, and that would be for an intro science course, like intro Bio, Psych, Chem, etc. Other than that, classes seem to be no bigger than 25-30 max. Other exceptions would be bands, orchestras, and choirs. Even as a freshman I have small classes. One so far that I know of has 14, and another only has 8! So I’m happy about that!

I think most of our classes range from 20 - 250ish. 25 for more specialized classes, and 250 for the prereq classes like Gen. Ghem or basic English classes.

hmmm my college ranges from 5-250 (i think).

I hated being in a class of about 250 people. I wouldn’t go to a class with 1000 people. lol That majorly sucks.

Biggest i’ve ever had was a class of about 120.

I have 2 classes this coming semester with 400something students. Gen chem and calc 1.

Haha, I beat everyone. 3 classes with 200+ students. Luckily, two of them have small recitations of about 25 students, so it doesn’t really matter how big the courses are. But there is a huge difference of class sizes from a flagship state school (me) and a small LAC.

I think my psych lecture section had 300 people in it.

Biggest I’ve had: 250ish. But because it was a large lecture, not everybody would show up everyday, so it wasn’t a big scare to me and I always sat near the front. People mostly showed up for test days and for the TA led discussions once a week.

Biggest at my school: 1000ish. General chemistry. Too many people want to have health career majors, so it’s definitely the biggest class on campus, held in the largest auditorium (has a balcony level too…) I’ve never stepped in that auditorium though.

Mine was a gen-ed class called Eroticism and Love in the Middle Ages.

This was precisely why I chose an LAC over a public university. I’m looking forward to classes capped at 40 students, with an average class size of 17.

There’s a 500-seat lecture hall here.

Lol @Irvine

If it is to be, it is up to me…

A student going to the school I want to attend said her classes range from 4-30 students, with 30 students being for introductory classes and general classes.

I believe the largest in the nation is Cornell’s Psych 101. It’s in a multi-tiered concert hall and usually has 1600 students.

^Are you serious- 1600 in a class??? That’s crazy!!!
