I know college sport in order to join, you have to be recruited or try out. The sports I would want to join would be water polo or soccer are they selective?

haha yes, at the varsity and club level at least. Cal’s men’s varsity soccer team was ranked in the top-20 this year I believe, and their polo team consistently wins or makes it to the finals of the NCAA championship tournament. Cal is pretty competitive at every sport, I suggest looking at their athletic website, finding something you’re interested in, and emailing the coach. Good luck!

I am talking about the women’s team.

Not sure about soccer or polo, but you could always try crew team - my brother (sorry not a woman) didn’t have much trouble getting on the team, and the same should go for the women’s side.

do you know much about crew (for guys)? I emailed the frosh coach, but he hasn’t gotten back to me. I’m really light (around 128 lbs) and looking at the roster it seems like unless I gained 60 pounds (of muscle haha) the only role for me would to be a coxswain… except I’ve never rowed before, so I don’t even know what exactly a coxswain does

Serafina is there any more sports you could think of, I might try the crew team like you said thanks.

cerealbox1: The teams at Cal are HIGHLY competitive, even at the club level. You are smart to look at the rosters for each sport and see if you have the general physical attributes to match the rest of the roster, but that is only a starting point. A division one coach is not likely to recruit an undersized and inexperienced athlete in any sport. If you really want to pursue a sport that you are not experienced in, then sell yourself as an athlete who was at the top of your chosen sport in high school, but wants to try a new sport now. If you were not an elite athlete in high school, it is unlikely (but not impossible) that you will be selected to be on a college team. Some of the teams DO have walk on try outs at the beginning of the year and I think they are posted in the RSF and in the campus newspaper. Your best bet may be to participate at the intramural level. At that level, there are teams comprised of students who sign up with a group of friends, a group from their dorm, a group from a greek house, or another student organization. You get to compete at real games with referees and that may fulfill your desire to play sports and save you from the (more than) full time job that being on a division one sports team entails. At any rate, the people at the RSF have information on all things sports. Good luck.

thanks for the reply - the more I thought about it, the more I was thinking that there’s no way I’d be able to participate in crew either haha. Still, it was a fun dream
now to email the UGMO frisbee team
