What is the maximum units freshman can take? I want to take 4 classes, 5 units each.

I’m pretty sure you’re capped at 19 unless you get special permission.

Your first quarter: You can only enroll in up to 19 units. More than this requires permission from your college adviser.

It is possible to get this approval, but it is very difficult. It is very rarely given and I was only able to obtain it myself a few quarters ago because I was a transfer and presented my case well for why I should be allowed to take one unit over the maximum allowed. I had to jump through a ton of hoops, however, and I received the impression that I would not have gotten the approval if I had been a frosh.

After your first quarter: You can enroll in up to 19 before the quarter begins and up to 22 units after the quarter begins without permission from your college adviser if you have greater than 3.0 GPA. If your GPA is less than a 3.0, then you can only enroll in up to 19 units without permission.
